Combine unit roles

Use mixed formations for distinct support effects, prepare reconnaissance and artillery, and keep engineers available for mined or fortified approaches.

Combine unit roles

Combine different roles, keep their support relevant to the same fight, and avoid buying duplicate types solely to stack the same support effect. Protect the headquarters supplying the command chain.

RoleDocumented contributionWhat to check
InfantryHolds the front and follows penetration to retain the supply corridor.Keep enough ground-holding force behind the mobile advance.
Armour and mechanized infantryMobile penetration and a reserve able to respond to a gap.Avoid stretching beyond supply and the holding force.
Scouts and reconnaissance aircraftExpose enemy targets and improve information for preparation.Coordinate reconnaissance with the supported attack.
ArtilleryPrepares resistance and damages fortifications through barrages.Balance preparation with ammunition available.
Anti-tank gunsProvide the support-gun effect alongside artillery, improving nearby friendly damage and fortification destruction.Include different support types; duplicate support-gun sources do not stack the same effect.
EngineersClear mines, support passage and destroy or strengthen fortifications.Allow clearance preparation and keep support with the assault.
Anti-aircraft gunsThreaten aircraft as well as ground targets.Review hostile flak before keeping aircraft over the same area.
HeadquartersLeadership and nearby support effects.Preserve the officer and command chain when considering forward movement.

§Different types bring different support#

The official Combined Arms diary describes nearby units of different types providing support effects. Repeating the same type does not stack the same bonus, and a type does not supply itself with its own support effect. A mixed regiment therefore has a documented benefit that a larger group of identical companies cannot reproduce by duplication alone.

Proximity matters in that description. Having specialists somewhere in the division does not establish that they are supporting the engagement you care about. Check the actual arrangement and assigned roles. Numeric ranges, modifiers and durations remain dated development values until checked in the release interface.

§Prepare mines and fortifications#

The engineer diary describes mine laying and clearing, stronger fortifications and specialist tools for destroying enemy defences. Minefields take time to develop and mine laying consumes supply. Clearing an enemy field needs preparation time; nearby engineers can protect accompanying troops from mine effects.

Some bunkers and obstacles are prebuilt scenario features and cannot be built during the mission. Mechanized engineers offer more mobility and firepower with a greater supply and Requisition burden. Choose based on the assault pace and support route, without assuming a fixed best engineer variant.

§Keep a line and a mobile reserve#

The defence diary places infantry on the line and mobile armour in reserve. Towns and forests favour defence while slowing movement; edges can force an approach across open ground. High ground improves observation and combat position. Swamps, wetlands and beaches are described as unfavourable positions.

A shorter front on favourable ground can be easier to support than a long thin line. Retain reserves near important approaches and depots. Stationary units dig fortifications, so initial deployment and time in position affect preparation. These are general defensive principles, without a mission-specific winning route.

§Coordinate the support before committing#

Use the documented Specialist Actions concept to coordinate appropriate support roles. For a prepared assault, review reconnaissance and bombardment, engineer support where needed, a penetration force and a reserve, followed by troops to hold the gains.

If aircraft meet anti-aircraft fire, the diary recommends changing their operation area or engaging the threat from the ground. If the assault reaches its target, check the corridor and supplies before continuing. A successful attack needs its supporting system to survive the next phase.
